Estate Planning Attorney - Tax Specialist

The Ashmore Law Firm, P.C.

 Dallas, TX

About the role

The Ashmore Law Firm, P.C. is hiring an Estate Planning Attorney with an LL.M. in Taxation and at least 3 years of experience to work directly with Lori Ashmore Peters, Managing Attorney and Head of Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Litigation.

Founded in 1987 by the late Judge Joseph E. Ashmore, Jr., we are a boutique Dallas firm in Turtle Creek (3636 Maple Ave). Our estate planning practice serves individuals, couples, business owners and high-net-worth families who want a long-term attorney, not a one-time transaction.

This is a full-time, in-office position in Dallas, Texas. You will build custom plans, guide clients through probate and trust administration, and grow with a practice that stays with clients through every chapter of life.

Responsibilities

  • Design and draft custom estate plans: wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney, medical directives and related documents.
  • Advise clients on gift and estate tax planning, exemption strategy, and wealth transfer for business owners and high-net-worth families.
  • Prepare federal gift and estate tax returns (Forms 709 and 706) and coordinate with CPAs and wealth advisors.
  • Assist with business succession planning and asset protection in coordination with the firm's business and tax professionals.
  • Handle probate, estate administration and trust administration matters in Texas courts.
  • Support Lori on guardianship matters and on trust and estate disputes.
  • Lead and participate in complimentary client consultations, explain options in plain language, and help clients talk with their families about their wishes.
  • Manage your own caseload with paralegal support, meet deadlines, and keep clients informed.
  • Help clients review and update their plans after life changes such as a birth, death, marriage, or the purchase or sale of assets.
  • Contribute to firm visibility through articles, client seminars, media opportunities and community involvement.

Qualifications

Required

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • LL.M. in Taxation.
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • At least 3 years of experience in estate planning, including trust drafting and tax-related planning.
  • Working knowledge of Texas probate procedure and trust administration.
  • Strong drafting, research and organizational skills, with close attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Experience preparing Forms 706 and 709.
  • Experience with business succession planning or closely held business interests.
  • Probate litigation or trust dispute experience.
  • Progress toward Board Certification in Estate Planning and Probate Law (Texas Board of Legal Specialization).
  • Familiarity with practice management software such as Clio.

Who thrives here

  • Motivated. You want to grow your skills and your practice, and you take ownership of your work.
  • A self-starter. You manage files independently, spot what needs doing, and move matters forward without waiting to be asked.
  • Good with clients. You listen well, explain complex tax and legal concepts simply, and build trust with families during sensitive moments.
  • A team player. You enjoy collaborating with attorneys, paralegals, CPAs and wealth advisors to serve the client.

What we offer

  • Direct mentorship from Lori Ashmore Peters, recognized by Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers.
  • Sophisticated estate and tax planning work for business owners and high-net-worth families.
  • A collegial boutique firm where clients are treated the way they would want to be treated.
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus benefits.
